Hello, our 16-yo son is currently in inpatient psychiatric care with a diagnosis of hypomania. We did not have him diagnosed with autism prior to this, so he does not have the benefit of any therapy or self-awareness of his autism, but the psychiatrists in the hospital agree that he's autistic but "very high functioning." He also has ADHD, and the hypomania seems to indicate budding bipolar disorder. He is miserable in the hospital (and we are miserable too), but he is having serious mental health issues (not sleeping more than a couple of hours a night for a month, hallucinating, confusion ... very serious stuff), so he needs inpatient care at the moment. He is very defensive and does not want to take the prescribed medication to treat his hypomania. He is also very angry with us. (This is all very new -- he was doing well until early April.) Due to his resistance to taking medication for his mental health, he may need further inpatient care or residential care. We absolutely hate this, but we are at a point of needing to know if there are any inpatient facilities that would be especially well suited to treating an autistic teen with bipolar disorder. We are located in the South, we have good insurance, and we have some resources to pay for help.
