My 17 yo ASD daughter is struggling to make it through the 11th grade at public school. She has a counselor and an OT. She was home schooled until 7th, then went to a private school (disaster-they said they could handle ASD kids and could not), Transitioned to Public in 8th with 3 classes a day. Entered HS with full schedule, but managed pretty well, especially academically. She struggles with the other students disrespectful, disruptive behavior, noise, etc. She has an IEP, which we have had to update a few times each year. She has had rough patches the past 2 years, but this year is much worse. She is doing academically well in all but Algebra 2, which she needs to graduate. She is refusing to go to algebra class at this point, is in defense mode most of the school day, and mentally thinks she is a failure. She wants to drop out. We are at a crossroads of dropping out for mental health reasons and changing the IEP for more accommodations. She had wanted to become a marine biologist, but can not see any future for herself right now. Thoughts are appreciated. Thank you.
