This is regarding my friend’s son (I will save my questions about my daughter for another day). He is 24 and has Autism but has not received much help for it. He also has a lot of difficulty speaking. He is very high functioning in most things. He has been basically staying in his bedroom all the time for the past 4-5 years since he graduated high school. He is afraid of almost everything so stays in his room. He did briefly go to community college in-person and also did well for a semester online. But hasn’t gone back. He has done some therapy in person and online as well as biofeedback but not much. Last year he was so depressed he tried to get into the local psychiatric hospital, but even though he was saying that he didn’t see the point of living, they would not take him. He berates his mother and himself almost every night. My feeling is that he would do well to get out of the house and be at a residential psychiatric treatment place for at least some months. The ones that I have called however have said that in their experience people with autism who have not gotten direct help with their autism, do not benefit as much from their therapy. My question is does anyone know of a good residential treatment facility that could help him better? One that helps folks with autism? Or would online coaching/therapy work just as well? Any recommendations there? Thanks
