Hey everyone, my kiddo had an incredible barber who is changing careers so I’ve been spending time trying to to identify a new one that would work for him. It made me wonder why there aren’t universal “directories” for neurodiverse-friendly/welcome businesses. And maybe stickers that would be akin to LGBTQ+ to help identify businesses who are educated/have sone training about neurodiverse consumers/clients. I have seen many community spaces (zoo, theaters, museum) set aside times for low sensory experiences, which is cool but I’m thinking about smaller businesses. So then I thought well, why not try to create something in my own town? I think I’d produce an educational piece and then offer up stickers/add the businesses to a central social media page/make flyers for distribution. So that everyone doesn’t have to start from scratch. I think I have a good handle on a lot of what would make these places more welcoming for neurodiverse: low sensory input, flexibility with communication, more time to acclimate/take breaks etc… but I thought it would be wise to survey this group. What would make a business more comfortable for you or a neurodiverse loved one?
