Her autism saved us 15k! We purchased a Kia soul a few years ago, when it was around 85,000 miles it started doing a minor tapping and consuming a bit more oil. She is very fastidious about her car, to the point where I think she babies it. But the tapping was driving her nuts, and she was certain something was wrong. We took it to the dealer several times who said it was fine and to bring it back if the problem consisted. We brought it back several times on her insistence because she was not letting this issue drop. She insisted they do a test that would check if there was issues in the engine. There were what they called minor striations, and since it was still under the 100,000 miles a new engine would be covered under warranty. It was because she was so insistent that they did the engine replacement. It was because of her autism that she even noticed the tapping, and would not letting the issue go. Apparently, now the cars are having this exact issue and the first signs are the slight tapping and heightened oil consumption, eventually resulting in needing a new engine, but most people let the issue go or accept the answer that it's fine. Most people can ignore the tapping, most people are ending up paying out of pocket to fix these engines. If you have a Kia make sure to check the oil consumption levels. Or I guess just listen to your ASD spouse/child when they insist there is a problem.
