Our 10-year old is still in diapers. He absolutely refuses to use the toilet and refuses to wipe poo or pee. We are at the end of our rope. Our ABA company will not even engage with the issue despite our son being highly intelligent. We have recently discovered the PDA subtype of autism and feel this fits him well. But how do you get a PDA + Asperger's kid to potty train? We have seen OTs, play therapists, ABA therapists, Craniosacral therapists, autism doctors, developmental pediatricians and plenty of GIs, and now psychiatrists who are prescribing meds. What in the world do I do to potty train this kid? He can’t attend a normal school, go on play dates, be an active kid because he refuses to let others know he wears a diaper and will refuse to sit in a car or do many other things with a soiled diaper. Yet he is not socially motivated enough to potty train. It is part fear of the unknown, part laziness and part sensory or OCD-driven. I don’t even know what to do at this point.
