Hi, I am a New Member. I am hoping some of the parents in this community can share some advice. I have a 9-year-old daughter with high functioning autism. Her Social skills have always been her biggest challenge. Recently I noticed that she has very few friends at school. And she confided in me that it’s very hard for her to make friends. She is down to just two friends at school. She says the girls are mean; they will play with her for a while, and then just drop her. When I observe her interactions with other kids during play dates, I noticed that she doesn’t engage in meaningful conversations as older kids do, but rather she runs around and engages in physical play like a young child would. Is there anything I can do to help her make friends at school? Are there any books out there that help teach kids on the spectrum how to make friends? Thank you for your advice!
