I’ve been trying to get my almost 7 year old daughter Vanessa an IEP for over a year. She has a 504 plan for ADHD and Encopresis. I had her evaluated by OT, PT, and SLP, and they all said that there’s not negative effects on her academic performance to get her an IEP. Vanessa has ongoing issues with her ears. She went to the ENT, and she goes to the audiologist after they call me. Then she will get her tonsils removed. Vanessa has always had an astigmatism and is nearsighted like me, but for the past couple years the eye doctor has been putting off giving her glasses until “she needs to focus at school”. Just this week she is finally getting her first pair of glasses. I took her to the eye doctor and he asked me why we were there. I told him that she has trouble reading and her writing is crooked. He told me that she needs to get practice reading and that I need to read with her at home and that getting classes won’t help her learn to read. He asked me if I had any questions and I asked him about vision therapy. He said that it would be beneficial for her because she has trouble tracking. He said that the specialist will give me homework to do with her and that the therapy won’t work if we don’t do the homework. I looked it up. Tracking skills are needed for reading, and vision therapy is effective for tracking and reading skills.
