We have a 12 year old son who was diagnosed with high functioning ASD about 1 1/2 years ago. For many years, though, we thought he had a metabolic disorder, because he needed to eat frequently (even when he didn't feel hungry), to keep from melting down. Through the years we managed much of his behavior through food, even though we did extensive metabolic and endocrine testing and found nothing. Even today, with the knowledge of his ASD, he needs to eat something about once an hour, even if he's sure he's not hungry. Has anyone else experienced this with Aspergers/ASD? And any tips on how to better manage blood sugar/metabolism/whatever-it-is?
